Word of Faith

1927; as a movement from 19744 sourced positions

A demonology the deliverance manuals do not share. The question here is not what is inside a person but on what legal footing Satan holds anything at all.

In its own terms

What this body is doing

The line runs from Kenyon in the 1920s through Hagin, whose training centre opened in 1974, to the broadcast ministries that carried it worldwide. Its account of the spiritual world is legal rather than martial. Adam is held to have forfeited a dominion that was his to forfeit; Satan holds what he holds by that legal claim rather than by force; the believer is restored to that authority in Christ and exercises it by speaking rather than by petitioning. The name of Jesus functions in this teaching as delegated authority already possessed, which is why its characteristic act is a declaration and not a request.

That framework is worth stating carefully because it is routinely described only through its consequences — the emphasis on confession, on health and on prosperity — which makes it look like a set of promises rather than the doctrine of authority it is arguing from. The corpus records the reasoning and dates each element, as it does for the deliverance literature next to it.

Pentecostal and charismatic · 1974

A teaching that spread through radio, paperbacks and a training centre rather than through any synod, and was never asked to separate from anything — most of its adherents remained in Pentecostal churches that had not endorsed it.

What it holds

Are the gifts still given?

Described from a text the corpus holds

Continuing, and held to be exercised by authority rather than sought as a blessing.

The premise of the whole teaching: what the believer has is a standing authority rather than a gift given occasion by occasion.

Who may act?

Not established here. The first thing a rite settles, usually in its opening rubric, and the sharpest divide between an office and a gift.

What counts as evidence?

Not established here. Where a tradition decides it is dealing with a spirit rather than an illness, a grief, or nothing at all.

Where is the spirit?

Described from a text the corpus holds

In the circumstances, the body and the finances — wherever a legal claim is held to run.

The framework locates the adversary's foothold in a forfeited dominion rather than primarily inside a person, which is why its practice addresses situations as often as spirits.

Whom do the words address?

Described from a text the corpus holds

The problem, spoken to directly, on authority already held.

Kenyon's argument about the name of Jesus is the root: the name is used as a delegated authority rather than appealed to, so the characteristic form is a declaration rather than a petition.

The Wonderful Name of Jesus · 1927

What restraint is written in?

Not established here. Every one of these traditions knows the practice can harm. What each does about that is what popular accounts leave out.

What closes the matter?

Described from a text the corpus holds

Nothing formal. The confession is maintained rather than concluded.

Because the mechanism is a standing authority exercised in speech, the matter is held open by definition — which is the point at which critics inside the movement say the teaching becomes unfalsifiable for the person under it.

What happened afterwards

Reception

The most heavily criticised movement on this chart, and the sharpest criticism has come from inside Pentecostalism rather than from cessationists: McConnell's study, written at a charismatic university in 1988, traces the movement's vocabulary to Kenyon and Kenyon's to the metaphysical cults of his own day. The corpus carries that objection beside the teaching rather than under it.

This page records what a body holds and where that is written down. It takes no position on whether any of it is true, and nothing here is instruction — the rites are described by what they contain, never as something to follow.
