Historiographie et médecine: à propos de Jeanne des Anges et de la possession de Loudun
Thérèse Griguer
An article in the Annales de Bretagne et des Pays de l'Ouest on how the Loudun possessions were rewritten by the people who edited them. Its subject is not whether Jeanne des Anges was possessed but what the nineteenth-century medical editors did to her account when they published it as the autobiography of a hysteric with a preface by Charcot. Carried here as reception history: the corpus already separates what a text says from what later tradition made of it, and this is a worked study of the second happening to a case the corpus holds.
